Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police
Statement by Ontario’s Police Leaders Regarding the Death of Sergeant Eric Mueller, Ontario Provincial Police
Chief Nishan Duraiappah
President, Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police
Today’s tragic killing of Sergeant Eric Mueller represents another reminder of the realities of duty and service for police officers in the Province of Ontario and throughout Canada. Close to recent on-duty deaths over the past several months in our province and country, Sergeant Mueller’s ultimate sacrifice again plunges our police community into deep mourning.
Sergeant Mueller’s death in service to his community, Ontario, and Canada is deeply felt by this officer’s family and friends. It touches every woman and man in policing. Sergeant Mueller was senselessly killed while doing his duty. He was senselessly struck down while doing his duty. Two of his colleagues from the OPP’s Rockland Detachment also responded to the same incident and received gunshot injuries. Thankfully, both are recovering from their injuries.
All members of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) express their deepest sympathies to Sergeant Mueller’s family, friends, and colleagues. To Commissioner Carrique and the proud women and men of the Ontario Provincial Police, know that you do not stand alone. Each member of our Ontario police community stands with you, shoulder flash to shoulder flash, sworn and civilian members united in grief.
Thank you to all of the first responders who were involved in dealing with today’s call for service that ended so tragically. Thank you to the paramedics, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel who worked hard to help to our officers.
Thank you to Ontarians and Canadians who stand with us today as we mourn.
Know that even as we grieve, police officers and civilians across Ontario and Canada continue to serve their communities in an unwavering manner, committed to ensuring the safety of their communities, and always will.
