Law enforcement organizations are complex organizations within the justice system (another complex entity). Progressive police leaders are constantly striving to introduce or advocate for changes that enhance their members’ ability to work in safe and healthy environments, support those members in their work, and deliver on the public’s expectations for effective and efficient policing. Delivering progressive policing is not easy to accomplish, but hard work is necessary if we’re to be part of building a fair and just society.
We are pleased to engage in OACP initiatives that support progressive policing and enhance the delivery of community policing. The OACP is also pleased to support policing and other partners who share our goals:
- Under the leadership of first Vice-President Chief Nishan Duraiappah, an Anti-Racism Working Group is working on real solutions to systemic racism issues in policing.
- In partnership with the Munk School of Global Affairs (University of Toronto), we are working on ways to encourage positive changes to policing that benefit our members, police personnel, and the citizens of Ontario.
- Evidence-Based Policing (EBP) will play an essential part in how we police in the future. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Cambridge Centre for Evidence-Based Policing (CCEBP) to share information and learning opportunities for police personnel in Ontario. Last February, we held a very successful EBP virtual, three-day conference. Watch for more learning opportunities in the future and for CCEBP-related news on our website and Round-up.
- Serving With Pride is offering 2SLGBTQ+ Awareness and Practices workshops for police, Law Enforcement, and Criminal Justice Professionals designed to educate front-line and administrative personnel. These workshops are day-long, live, interactive educational opportunities. For more information, click here.
- The Canadian Association of Latino Peace Officers (CALPO) offers a mentorship program for Latino members of our communities who are interested in a law enforcement career. For more information, click here.
