The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) has introduced the latest in a series of nationally endorsed best practices designed to assist police services across the country in implementing a trauma-informed approach to all areas of responsibility.
The Canadian Framework for Trauma-Informed Response in Policing is a follow up to CACP Resolution 2022-03 which called for the development of a trauma-informed framework for police services to support victims of crime. This resolution was adopted by CACP members during the 117th CACP Annual General Meeting held on July 25, 2022.
These new guidelines complement the National Framework for Collaborative Police Action on Intimate Partner Violence (2016) and the Canadian Framework for Collaborative Police Response on Sexual Violence (2019) (a collaboration with the OACP) by expanding the trauma-informed approach to focus on violent crimes more generally, which can involve trauma for both victims and the police officers who handle the investigations.
