Ontario’s police leaders have released a new resource document to raise awareness about the true nature of organized crime in Ontario. Bringing Organized Crime Out of the Shadows provides easy-to-read information about the reality of organized criminal activity in our province.
The new resource document was developed by police experts on organized crime who are members of the OACP’s Intelligence and Organized Crime Committee. The document, first developed in 2010, focuses on a number of important areas of organized criminal activities, including:
• Popular misconceptions of organized crime groups and activities
• Debunking popular media stereotypes
• The terrible toll extracted by human trafficking
• The rise of cybercrimes
• Cannabis legalization and organized crime
• Fraud and commercial crimes
• Street gangs and organized crime, and
• The on-going threats to public safety posed by the illicit drug trade.
“As police leaders, we are concerned that many people have misconceptions about organized crime or don’t understand how these types of criminal activities can harm their finances, their family’s well-being and safety, or business and financial assets across Ontario,” said Superintendent Barry Dolan (Peel RP), the committee’s Chair. “By making Out of the Shadows available through all our police organizations, we hope to raise awareness about organized crime today and truly bring it out of the shadows.”
