The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) is pleased to announce that Constable Terilee Shisler with the Waterloo Regional Police Service is the recipient of the 2021 OACP Youth Service Volunteer Award.
This award recognizes a currently serving civilian or sworn member of an Ontario police service who has contributed in an exemplary manner through volunteerism to the overall well-being of youth.
For Constable Shisler, making a difference in her community as a first responder starts by supporting and helping families within the school or social service system and in their everyday life events. She is involved in numerous programs offered by the Waterloo Regional Police Service and has volunteered at children and youth-related organizations on her own time and in her community.
Reach for It!, a program run through the service, was created for children, youth, and their families living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Children and youth are matched one-on-one in a mentorship capacity with a Police Constable and engage in fun recreational activities that build self-esteem. To date, Constable Shisler has led 13 “Reach for It!” events ranging from trips to farms, fishing derby’s, girl spa days, and more. She gives her time, donates money and resources to the program, and motivates other officers to do the same. This program has provided hope for many families and has been successful in recognizing the children’s strengths.
Constable Shisler recently started the Just Girl Stuff Program for girls in grades 7 and 8 to prepare them for high school and is currently mentoring a young woman who has been diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa.
In December 2019, Constable Shisler received her 15-year Service Award with Big Brothers and Sisters. She is an eight-year member of WRPS and is currently a Detective in the Special Victims Unit.
