On September 30, the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) commemorated the first-ever National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (#NDTR; #OranageShirtDay2021; #EveryChildMatters). We were proud to join Indigenous police services and organizations in recognizing this day as a national holiday. We encouraged all Ontario police services to make the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation a day of remembrance and of commitment to working together with Indigenous communities for healing and support for all Indigenous peoples in Ontario and Canada.
The OACP asked police leaders to encourage police personnel to participate in activities in their communities, marking this special day. Police personnel are also encouraged to consider showing support for Indigenous communities by wearing orange shirts.
The OACP also encourages police services to make reconciliation an ongoing priority of their work with Indigenous communities. For more information on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, click here.
