The OACP Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee met in Sarnia, ON, on the Aamjiwnaang First Nation this week for a day of learning and meaningful discussions. The committee had an opportunity to visit the Aamjiwnaang First Nation Residential and Day School Monument (on-site), meet and chat with Cst. Tyler Callandar, see the new Aamjiwnaang Community Officer Vehicle Design, and share important updates on current EDI initiatives happening across Ontario.
During the meeting, the finalization of the updated Hate/Bias Crime: A Review of Policies, Practices, and Challenges document was also announced, first released by the OACP in 2020. It was first designed to assist police officers and other personnel in effectively dealing with criminal incidents and criminal activities motivated by hate toward identifiable individuals and groups, and we hope that it continues to assist services as we experience a surge in hate-motivated activities.
The document will be available to the membership in the coming week, and we urge all police services to share the document with their members as well as community groups concerned about the increase of hate/bias crimes and incidents in Ontario.
Thank you to the Sarnia Police Service and Aamjiwnaang First Nation for graciously hosting this dedicated group of EDI leaders!
