April 1st marked a significant day for policing in Ontario as the Community Safety & Policing Act (CSPA) finally comes into force. This is not the end of legislative reform for law enforcement in our province. It will take hard work in the coming months to determine how the new law is working.
One area of significant change with the new legislation is the establishment of the Inspectorate of Policing. The Inspectorate issued a news release, which contains a quote from OACP President Chief Jim MacSween.
Thank you to our OACP Police Legal Advisors Committee (PLAC) for developing some valuable resources on the CSPA to help police leaders navigate the new law and its regulations. Please contact Dr. José Luís (Joe) Couto, Director of Government Relations and Communications, at jcouto@oacp.ca.
