The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Mental Health Community of Practice (MCOP) for Law Enforcement Sub-Committee is a newly formed sub-committee within the Police Response to Persons in Crisis Committee of the OACP.
It is a goal of the Sub-Committee to organize an annual conference aimed at assisting and educating first responders on how to assist people in crisis. The first 2023 MCOP Conference was held December 7, 2023, in Aurora, ON. OACP President Chief Jim MacSween addressed the conference and delegates heard from a great line-up of speakers, including:
- Dr. Craig Bennell, Carleton University
- Representatives from the Substance Abuse Program for African Canadian and Caribbean Youth (SAPACCY)
- Dr. Jennifer Lavoie, Hamilton Police Service
- An Indigenous Panel which focused on “Reconciliation Rooted in Truth” and featured Chief Cheryl Gervais, Treaty Three Police Service, Sergeant Chantal Larocque, Anishinabek Police Service, and Angela Duckworth, Durham Community Health Centre.
The wellness of our police service members is a priority for Ontario police leaders. We look forward to next year’s conference and the important work of the MCOP.
