Ontario’s Police Leaders Welcome and Support Canada’s Premiers on a Review of the Bail System in Canada
The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) welcomes and supports Canada’s Premiers in their call for the Government of Canada to launch a thorough review of the bail system in our country. The letter issued jointly by all of Canada’s provincial leaders on January 13, 2023 reflects the OACP’s position as outlined in our statement of December 29, 2022, which emphasized that police leaders in Ontario have and will continue to advocate for legislative reforms in the delivery of justice for all Canadians, including the bail process involving violent repeat offenders and violent firearms crimes.
In our view, all justice multi-sector partners – government, law enforcement, and justice groups –should come together in a collaborative manner to promote community well-being and ensure the safety of our communities and the police officers who serve them.
The OACP reiterates that the time for action on legislative reform is now. We are currently developing suggested legislative amendments related to firearms and violent crimes with a view to working with government and other justice partners to make our communities safer.
