OHRC Issues Statement on Keeping Prison Custody Numbers Low

On May 11, 2021, the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) issued a statement calling for justice sector organizations – including police – to implement measures aimed at limiting the number of individuals in correctional facilities or in custody. A number of the recommendations were identified specifically to police organizations.

Police Week is Almost Here!

During Police Week (May 9 to 15), Ontario police services will highlight their service, people, and many accomplishments. Starting in 1970, Police Week coincides with Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is recognized internationally on May 15. This year, we want to celebrate community partnerships. All of us – police, communities, government, businesses, and ordinary citizens – must work together when it comes to public safety, crime prevention, and community engagement.

Changes to Police Ceremony of Remembrance

Due to the Provincial COVID-19 restrictions, the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation (OPMF) Ceremony of Remembrance has had to be further scaled back on Sunday, May 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. The original intent was for police services across Ontario to provide still photography or pre-recorded videos honouring the ceremony, so they could be incorporated during the broadcast.

Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week

This year, Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week takes place between May 2 and 8. Given the current environment and focused efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, the week is being promoted online, using the official hashtags #EPWeek2021 #SemainedelaSC2021. Online public education resources are available as well as the new Government of Canada EP Week resources.
