Standing together to make a difference

This Week @ Queen’s Park – July 13, 2018

  • All Chiefs of Police/OPP Commissioner received a briefing package on the new Government of Ontario and Members of the Provincial Parliament. The package lists all newly elected MPPs, the Cabinet, background on key Ministers and Deputy Ministers, etc. We look forward to working with all our provincial officials and partners on community safety and well-being issues.
  • A new session of the legislature began on July 11, 2018, with the election of MPP Ted Arnott as Speaker of the House.  The government’s first three priorities were eliminating cap and trade, ending the York University strike, and cancelling a wind farm project in Prince Edward County. A Speech From the Throne was delivered on July 12, 2018 outlining the new government’s legislative priorities. On the policing front, the government has already announced a “delay” in the enactment of the Ontario Special Investigations Unit Act.
  • The new Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, the Honourable Michael Tibollo, spoke with OACP President Chief Kimberley Greenwood this week to discuss issues Ontario’s police leaders and MCSCS should work on together.  A formal meeting with the OACP Board Executive is being planned for the near future.
