Systemic Racism exists in policing. This is a fact that Ontario’s police leaders have been clear on. In order to help our members and all police personnel better understand what systemic racism is, how it differs from individual racism, what the implications are for policing, and promote honest and courageous conversations about what we as police leaders must do to combat systemic racism in our profession, the OACP’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee has developed a short fact sheet, available here.
The fact sheet is timely given the release of a CBC report on encounters with Canadian police which have resulted in a fatality. The report argues that there is an overrepresentation on Black and Indigenous people in such encounters as well as that most of the encounters involved mental health issues.
