The OACP is supporting the distribution of new material from the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and the Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council designed to raise awareness about Canada’s Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act. This law aims to remove a major barrier when calling 911 during an overdose emergency—the threat of being charged with drug possession.
Funding from the Law Foundation of Ontario has allowed the printing of 50,000 free, laminated wallet-size cards that clarifies what charges the law does and does not provide, and immunity from the scene of an overdose emergency. Available in English and French, the wallet card also provides 1-800 numbers for services in Ontario if legal assistance is required.
The wallet card and an accompanying fact sheet is available for free download at www.overdoseprevention.ca and www.aidslaw.ca. Please consider using the hashtag #GoodSamLaw to promote this information.
