Starting a Collaborative Discussion Around the Opioid Challenge

Starting a Collaborative Discussion Around the Opioid Challenge

Ontario’s opioid overdose crisis poses significant challenges to community safety and well-being.  At a variety of levels and across multiple sectors it has been called a ‘crisis’, an ‘emergency’ and an ‘epidemic’. Early evidence in 2017 points to another escalation of deaths in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. In 2016, an opioid-related death occurred every 10 hours in Ontario, with the (bootleg) fentanyls present in 352 of the 865 opioid-related deaths.

It is widely acknowledged that reducing the harms from opioid use will require the urgent collaboration of many sectors and systems, including solutions that reduce the demand for opioids via approaches in prevention, harm reduction and treatment.  Ontario is uniquely placed in Canada for having a network of municipally-based collaborative drug strategies that work alongside partners in enforcement and justice to improve community health and safety.

The OACP Substance Advisory Committee in partnership with other mutually invested agencies are progressively providing a forum for key note speakers and interactive discussions around the opioid crisis and the challenges we are facing locally, provincially and nationally. It is important for all of us to understand the challenges we are facing, what we are doing in our respective fields, what responses we have to offer and what can we do collectively to address the opioid issues.

The intention of this symposium is to build relationships, share ideas, learn from one another and build on a multifaceted approach as we all work together to address what former Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott called an "unprecedented national public-health emergency."
